Medium sized anole. The back if dark green, taking a brown to black colour on the anterior part, sometimes smeared with lighter dots. The colour of the head varies from blue-grey to purple. The ventral side varies from light green to yellow, and the dewlap from orange to yellow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Standard body size (snout-vent length)<\/strong>. males: 46 to 83 mm; females: 42 to 60 mm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sexual dimorphism<\/strong>. Only males have a dewlap.<\/p>\n<p>Females are darker than males, and may present dorsal stripes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Variations<\/strong>. The body colour of the same individual can vary from light to dark, depending on its physiological condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Possible confusion with other species<\/strong>. Confusion is possible with the phylogenetically close species, <em>Anolis\u00a0 roquet<\/em>, native to Martinique.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Distribution<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Native<\/strong>. Barbados.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduced<\/strong>. Venezuela (Rivas et al., 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Caribbean: Saint Lucia (Gorman, 1976; Giannasi et al., 1997), Bermuda (Losos, 1996), Trinidad (Murphy et al., 1997).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Biology and evology<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Habitat<\/strong>. <em>Anolis extremus<\/em> can cope with a great diversity of natural and anthropized habitats, but seems less present in grasslands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diet<\/strong>. Insectivore and frugivore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reproduction<\/strong>. The female lays a single egg every one to two weeks. Breeding occurs throughout the year in Barbados, with peak activity during the rainy season (Nummelin 1997).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behaviour<\/strong>. Similarly to most anole species, males can extend their dewlap in order to defend their territory, or when looking for a breeding partner.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Impact and management of introduced populations<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong>. Gorman (1976) suggested that <em>Anolis extremus<\/em> may have displaced the native species <em>A. luciae<\/em> in some urban and peri-urban areas of Castries in Saint Lucia. Williams and colleagues (2019) pointed out that <em>A. extremus<\/em> seems to prevail only in these urban and disturbed areas, but recent observations in eastern and southern parts of the island suggests a potentially broader dispersion.<\/p>\n<p>Giannasi and colleagues (1997) also noted the absence of hybridisation, sometimes suggested, between <em>A. extremus<\/em> and <em>A. luciae<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management<\/strong>.
